Happy Halloween

Halloween is not my holiday, but my kids really like dressing up for candy.  They like the scary decorations, and we have places in our neighborhood that go all out.  Halloween in our neighborhood is crazy.  I think families drive in to our neighborhood to go around for candy.  I have my bags ready, with enough for 300 trick or treaters, and I enjoy passing out candy but it’s still not my thing.

The main thing that I don’t like about Halloween is the scary part.  I have never been much for being scared.  I never liked haunted houses, and having people jump out at me from a dark space.  I don’t like being scared and avoid horror movies.  They give me nightmares.  I hear enough horrific things providing support to people in therapy.  I don’t need anything extra.  I remember in high school, spending time with friends.  They liked the horror films, and we spent nights watching movies like Friday The 13th and others.  They got mad at me when I talked about things being “in the script” but it was the only way I could watch them.  I think I drove my friends nuts.

The other thing that’s not for me is the dark colors.  I’m not much for black and gray.  It just makes me sad.  I really prefer more lively colors.  Don’t get me wrong, I love fall colors.  With the deep reds, oranges, and other fall colors, I love the fall decorations.  I also like pumpkin and the flavors that come with fall.  I remember carving pumpkins as a kid, and even with my kids.  Oozing pumpkin guts through my fingers was fun, and still is when we do it.  I also liked baking the seeds.  That was really great.  We ate them, salted with butter, and they were yummy!

I have to say that the one thing I really do like about Halloween is watching the young kids go trick or treating.  When my kids were little, we lived in a small town.  Our neighborhood was out away from town, so we took the kids downtown for trick or treating.   In our downtown area, the merchants gave out candy, and it seemed that everyone in town was there.  My kids like to go get candy and it was fun to see so many people we knew.  The younger kids were so cute, with their little costumes.  Even now, when the younger kids go by, they are so cute.  My kids still like to go trick or treating, and dress up.  They are creative about their costumes and spend time with friends.  That’s the way it should be.

Whether you like it or not, Halloween can be a fun holiday.  There are parties, and neighborly fun, and it is really the gateway for the holiday season.   Through the year, I do enjoy holiday times, from Halloween to the forth of July, but Halloween is just not my favorite.  That doesn’t make it bad, but watching my kids have fun makes it worth it.  Watching my kids enjoy the holiday makes me happy.  I hope that you find some happiness this Halloween, candy or not.
