Time to talk about self-care for a bit. I have talked about self-care before, but it’s a topic that is worth covering consistently and often.  I’m working on my own self-care, so I asked ChatGPT to give me some affordable self-care activities.  Here is what I got.

🧘‍♀️ Mind & Body

  1. Daily Walks in Nature – A 15–30 minute walk improves mood, reduces stress, and boosts creativity.
  2. Deep Breathing or Meditation – Use free apps like Insight Timer or YouTube for guided sessions.
  3. Stretching or Yoga at Home – Just 10 minutes can relieve tension. Yoga with Adriene (YouTube) is a popular free resource.
  4. Limit Screen Time – Schedule regular breaks from digital devices to rest your mind. (Love this!)
  5. Drink More Water – Staying hydrated is a simple act of self-care with big mental and physical benefits. (I need to definitely do this)

🛁 Relaxation & Comfort

  1. DIY Spa Night – Use household items like oats, honey, or sugar for scrubs and masks.
  2. Warm Showers with Aromatherapy – Add a few drops of essential oil (like lavender) for a relaxing boost. (Never thought about this)
  3. Comforting Hot Drink Ritual – A soothing herbal tea or hot lemon water can be a grounding daily habit.

📓 Emotional & Mental Well-being

  1. Journaling – Write 1–3 things you’re grateful for or reflect on your day. A dollar store notebook works fine. (We talk about this often)
  2. Digital Detox Hours – Set “no-phone” times to recharge and reconnect with yourself. (Such a great idea)
  3. Affirmations or Self-Compassion Statements – Post sticky notes on your mirror with reminders like “I am enough.” (Good idea, but never really worked for me)

🎨 Creativity & Expression

  1. Coloring or Doodling – Adult coloring books or simple sketches are soothing and fun.
  2. Listen to Music That Uplifts You – Make feel-good playlists for different moods.
  3. Dance Breaks – One song, full-body movement. Instant mood lift.

💞 Connection & Boundaries

  1. Say No Without Guilt – Protect your energy by setting healthy boundaries.
  2. Reach Out to a Friend – A short check-in text can boost both your moods.
  3. Join a Free Local Meetup or Online Support Group – Many are available via Meetup.com or Facebook.

There are lots of great ideas, and I’m even doing some of them already. Self-care is so important as a part supporting your happiness, and you should do something nice for yourself every day. I know it’s very hard to do, but it is something you should work to make happen.

Self-care doesn’t have to cost a lot.  It can be as simple as a walk, or even a shower every day. It just has to be something you do for you and no one else.  It should help you feel better about yourself and your world, and make you smile.  As I look at the list above, dance breaks sound great.  I love music.  Limiting screen time and doodling also sound like something I can incorporate in my self care.

My guess is that if you ask the internet for low cost self-care ideas, you will get a different list based on your search.  If you need ideas, try your own search.  Just make sure that you are taking care of yourself. It should always be part of being happy, for life.
