We seem to be living in a world that no longer values a person’s character.  In the past, the golden rule was discussed, although there were differing views of who was considered a neighbor. In a world where success is often measured by status, wealth, or popularity, the value of good character can sometimes be overlooked. Yet, it is our character that ultimately shapes the quality of our relationships, the integrity of our actions, and the legacy we leave behind. Good character is more than just doing the right thing when people are watching. It’s who we are at our core, and who we are in the privacy of our own home. Character influences every aspect of our lives.

What is Good Character?

Good character is like a strong tree with deep roots. It is also defined many different ways, in many different areas of our world. For me, good character refers to the set of moral and ethical qualities that define how a person thinks, behaves, and interacts with others. It includes honesty, kindness, responsibility, humility, respect, and integrity. While talent and intelligence may open doors, it is character that keeps them open.

A person with good character is someone who consistently strives to do what’s right, not what is best for them. They treat others with respect and empathy, admit when they are wrong, and live according to values that support the well-being of others as well as themselves. They understand that others have different opportunities and options, and often fight for those with less.

Why Good Character Matters

In both personal and professional settings, good character should build trust and respect. Whether you’re forming friendships, leading a team, or raising a family, your character affects how others perceive you and how they respond to you. People are drawn to those who are dependable, kind, and respectful. People are not usually drawn to people who lie and hurt others.

Good character also contributes to self-esteem and confidence. It creates integrity and helps improve relationships.  When you act with integrity and compassion, you don’t have to remember which lie you told to who or change your presentation depending on the company. You do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do.

In contrast, a lack of character, even when hidden temporarily, often leads to conflict, guilt, broken relationships, and long-term regret.  Deceptive actions, selfish choices, or unethical behavior may bring short-term gain, but they almost always come at a cost. There is little happiness in hurting others. It can lead to a lonely and empty life.

Character Development

Children are not born with character already in place.  Character is something you develop over time.  It comes from watching your family manage issues at home. It comes from how parents treat their children. It comes from how adults treat each other. It comes from words aligning with actions. There are many parts to character development, for me, honesty, being able to admit when you are wrong, and making changes in behavior when you know that your behavior is hurting others are key. Other key parts include:

  1. Be Accountable: Acknowledge your mistakes, and own them. Apologize sincerely, learn from it, and commit to doing better. Responsibility is a key pillar of good character.
  2. Show Respect: Treat others as you would like to be treated.  I know I would like to be treated with dignity and respect. Good character says I should treat others the same way.
  3. Understand Empathy: Empathy is more important than ever, yet it often feels overlooked. Recognizing that each person experiences the world differently is essential. We all come from unique backgrounds, face different challenges, and pursue our own paths and dreams. Understanding this helps us connect with others in a more compassionate and respectful way.
  4. Be Consistent: Character is proven over time.  Do the right thing consistently, not just when people are looking.
  5. Find Strong Role Models: Surround yourself with people of good character, who inspire you to be better. Observe how they handle challenges, success, and relationships.

Good character should be something you strive for every day. It’s choosing not to gossip.  It’s helping a stranger, admitting when you’re wrong, showing up on time, and standing up for what’s right. These small acts, repeated over time, create a foundation of confidence and strength.

Good character isn’t about being perfect, we all have our moments.  It’s about striving to live with integrity, kindness, and humility, even when it’s hard. The true measure of a person isn’t what they achieve, or how much money they have, but how they achieve it. Good character is what gives our lives meaning, our relationships depth, and our actions lasting impact. So, if you’re wondering where to start on the path to a better life, start with your character. It’s the strongest foundation you’ll ever build. It’s part of being happy, for life.
