Sometimes things get overwhelming.  Between work, family, the news, life, and everything else, sometimes it’s hard to just clear your mind and think.  I can’t tell you how many times people have talked about lying down and not being able to stop the thoughts racing through their minds as they try to fall asleep.  Most people have trouble finding peace, but it’s even harder to define a peace that you might be looking to find.  What is your definition of peace?  And when you know how to define it, how do you find it?

That sense of peace is different for everyone.  For some, it might include meditation or yoga.  For others it might be being in your own bed, with a cozy blanket and a book.  Peace might be a place, like the mountains or the beach.  It might include a feeling, like feeling safe in a situation.  Being at peace may be with your eyes open or closed, or it may include other senses like feeling the sun on your face or feeling the wind in your hair.   There are so many ways that you could be at peace, which makes it more important to consider what works for you.

I’m a firm believer in a whole health approach.  Finding time to be at peace becomes important for mind, body, and spirit.  Making time for those moments can help you manage your blood pressure, stress level, and even help with anger management.  People who are stressed or angry tend to have more health issues, I believe.  These issues can also affect your job and relationships.  Relationships with partners, children, and other family members, so it’s worth considering.  By considering how you find peace, you could work on and address so many issues in your life that may need review.

Counseling can help with finding peace, if you need skills and education.  A good therapist that works in whole health can provide instruction on meditation, mindfulness, and other calming tactics.  There is no shame in asking for help as you work to settle your mind.  After working with patients, I know that each person has a different idea of what works for them.  Some of my patients sit on the beach or take their motorcycle for a ride.   Others bake or read.  The key is finding something that works for you.    Don’t underestimate just spending time with someone you love to find peace.  It can be as simple as that.

There is no correct answer when you think about ways to find peace.  You also need to know that finding peace isn’t a state you stay in forever.  The trick is being able to find it if you need to just quiet your mind.  Finding peace can help you improve your relationships, your health, and your sleep.  Finding moments to be at peace during the day is healthy and can help you with your perspective on life.  Don’t forget that taking a minute to close your eyes, clear your mind, and find a little peace can get you through a really hard time.   It’s all a part of being happy, for life.
