So often, we have the best intensions. We have plans that include things we want to do, like repairs or upgrades around the house or traveling to see things that spike our interest. So many times our dreams and goals get set aside by life issues. From finances to just not having the time to chase a dream, there are so many times when we don’t take opportunities for things that are important. Watching these moments go by can increase depression and anxiety and stop us from being happy. We have to work, not to let life get in the way of our happiness.
So many times I have worked with people who give up on dreams, for many different reasons. They work in treatment to talk about goals and dreams they had to give up, because of choices they made. From money, to having children, to getting pregnant early, they gave up going to school, a career they dreamed of, and so much. By the time they come for support, their sadness is overwhelming and it’s hard to remember what their dreams were.

I often ask people about high school, and what their hopes and dreams were when they graduated. I often get very interesting answers. Some talk about going to college and having a career that makes lots of money. Others talk about travel, and others talk about just wanting a family and children. When we talk about dreams and goals that they have been able to realize, they struggle to identify anything positive. That can be very normal, when talking to someone with depression or anxiety. When you are feeling low, it’s hard to think about anything positive or happy. Just remember, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
There is always time to try to realize goals, even ones you had as a child. You can get a degree at 70, if that’s important to you. If a family is something that you want, build a family of friends that supports each other. If you don’t have the money you always wanted, you can to feel rich, without putting yourself in the poorhouse. There are so many possibilities to go back and review your life goals, and find happiness in your current life. If you want to travel, find books and information on places that you would like to see. Research trips that you might want to take at the library. You might be surprised that you could afford to take a trip, with planning.
Life isn’t over until you take that last breath. I have watched people find happiness, even after their darkest days, by really thinking and working on goals. They find love again. They change careers and find the job they always wanted. They get married again, even if they never thought they would. They learn how to be single, and enjoy it. They learn how to be a partner in a relationship, when they never thought they could. It’s normal for life to get in the way, but it’s not too late to be happy. Set some goals, and be happy, for life.
